Tape
Technology Comparison Report
|
| |
When choosing a tape backup solution,
you must be aware that there are several tape technologies.
Tape technologies, like software, are developed along
migration paths agreed upon by the standards organizations
governing each particular format. As formats follow these
migration paths, they improve upon the capacity, performance
and reliability of the previous version. But more important,
the newer versions remain, at a minimum, read-only compatible
with the previous version.

Cost of Ownership for Linux in the Enterprise |
| |
Through numerous conversations with IT executives,
Robert Frances Group, Inc. learned that Linux server
deployments are well under way, in many cases with notable
cost savings from those implementations. To further explore
and quantify this anecdotal evidence, Robert Frances

study to evaluate Linux deployments in the enterprise.
Survey participants included mid- to large-sized companies,
and of the companies polled, 14 yielded relevant data

| May 2001 - Understanding the Network Neighborhood |
| |
SMB, the Server Message Block Protocol,
is the most prevalent filesharing protocol on the planet
for a very simple reason -- it ships with every Microsoft
Windows system and, like it or not, Windows still owns
the desktop. Windows is also very common as a server
platform in corporate networks. Not content with those
markets, Windows is now findin.g its way into all sorts
of new places, including embedded systems, palmtops,
and consumer toys. As Windows moves onto new platforms,
SMB does too.

| June 28, 2002 - Free Relational Databases |
| |
You can probably think of plenty of
ways a relational database-management system could
simplify some of your development efforts. RDBMS software
provides standard mechanisms for storing and querying
data, efficiently supports multiple concurrent users,
lets you decouple data access from application logic,
and much more. Appealing stuff!
What's even better is that you can get
these benefits for free, thanks to open-source RDBMS
packages such as MySQL and PostgreSQL. While there
are certainly scenarios where it makes sense to pay
the big bucks for a high-end RDBMS like Oracle 9i or
Microsoft SQL Server--plus the hefty hardware and support
contracts you'll likely need to keep it all running--in
many cases there needn't be such a barrier to entry,
especially if you just want to learn or to implement
something like a simple database-backed website.

|
| |
Web Services signal
a new era of lightweight distributed application
development. While web Services are not intended
nor do they have the power to solve every distributed
application problem, they are an easy way to create
and consume services over the Internet. One of the
design goals for web Services is to allow companies
and developers to share services with other companies
in a simple way over the Internet.
"Web Services lower
the barrier for small companies and make large companies
more agile." says
Mike Amundsen, President of EraServer.NET, a .NET hosting
and XML web Service provider.
