Storage
Looking for information on computer storage? Here is a general overview of a computer’s
storage system and why a computer storage device is necessary for your computer.
What is Computer Storage?
Computer storage is one of the most important and vital components of your computer; it
is also known as the memory within the computer because its function is to store information.
A computer storage system is necessary for any computer because of its appropriate
functional qualities that enable a computer’s user optimal satisfaction.
Within a computer’s system, there are various types of storage serving different
purposes - primary, secondary, and network storage are three main computer storage
systems that work together to enable the computer to run and store information.
Primary Storage
This basic storage works directly with the central processing unit (CPU) of the
computer and has three types of storage within:
-Processor Registers
-Main Storage
-Processor Cache
The next type of computer data storage is in the Secondary, Tertiary, and Offline Storage.
The secondary storage usually has a higher capacity than the primary storage, but is in
turn slower. This type is used for continuous, longer term computer data storage.
Tertiary storage involves the use of a robotic arm handling off line storage media
at the computer’s command; it is used for the purposes of enterprise storage and
scientific computing. Most general computer users never see this. Offline storage is
the computer storage system that is used mainly for data transfer and archival purposes.
Floppy discs and optical disks are examples of offline storage.
The third type of storage device for computers is the Network Storage. Network storage
includes any computer storage uses a computer network to access information. This type
of computer storage also centralizes the information management and prevents information
from being duplicated. Included in this computer storage system is the:
Network-Attached Storage-secondary or tertiary storage that can be accessed
through different networks and the internet; stores documents and other data.
Network Computers-don’t contain internal secondary storage devices.
Hewlett Packard (hp) is an example of a computer company that offers different
computer storage systems and services. HP storage is one of the most well known
and recognized computer companies because of their computer products and technology,
as well as their customer service. InfoWorld is constantly rating and reviewing HP
storage products as top choices and smart buys for customers looking for the different
types of computer storage systems.
